The word respect is a human invention. It’s purpose and use is to elicit a group of feelings that include power, authority, boundaries, value and whatever else the listener associates with the word.
Horses don’t know diddley about the word respect OR its human interpretations. If you want to be a good trainer with your horse forget the word respect and focus on what you want in terms of PHYSICAL actions. Do you want your horse to stop within 2 feet of you? Then train that.
As a trainer my goal is to give my horse clear cues or signals. What I want from my horse is an effort to figure out what I want because he WANTS to. That’s good horse training.
